Phoenix's story

The heart behind PheNature.

Phoenix Birkett was much more than the moment in which he died. He was a son, brother and friend whose humour, kindness, courage and wonderfully different mind continue to inspire everything we create.

Meet Phoenix

Bright, funny and deeply caring.

Phoenix had a huge personality and a heart to match. He was charming, quick-witted and full of energy, with a gift for making people laugh and memories wherever he went.

He loved the gym, music, cooking pasta, the water, cats and spending time with his friends. He was caring and compassionate, especially toward animals and people who needed someone beside them.

Phoenix experienced the world intensely. His ADHD shaped his energy, impulsivity, emotions and the way he responded when life felt overwhelming. His mind was never something that needed to be hidden—it was part of the remarkable person he was.

Remembering Phoenix

His light lives on.

His legacy

Love carried forward.

Phoenix died aged 17 during a sudden, impulsive crisis. His death is part of his story, but it will never define the whole of his life.

PheNature was created so that what Lisa learned while raising and loving Phoenix could help other children, teenagers and families understand different minds, big emotions and the importance of reaching for support.

Through every story, journal and resource, Phoenix's name continues to stand for understanding, compassion and hope. Walk with Phoenix carries that love into action by campaigning for earlier intervention, safer places and better support before crisis.

A mother's love carried forward

What Love Became

I stand beside the water
with your name against my heart,
carrying all the love you left
when our worlds were torn apart.

The clouds still hold my sorrow,
the river knows my tears,
and every step without you
feels heavier through the years.

But look—the darkness opens,
a rainbow fills the sky,
and from the ache of losing you,
pink wings begin to rise.

You are the light behind me,
the strength beneath my feet,
the reason I keep speaking
when grief has left me weak.

I hold the words we're building—
each page, each hope, each plan—
to reach another frightened child
and help them understand.

My smile may carry sadness,
but my purpose carries you.
I will fight to make this world
more caring, kind and true.

I could not keep you with me
in the way a mother should,
so I will carry you through change
and turn our love to good.

I am your mum forever.
You are my guiding flame.
And while this pink phoenix rises,
the world will know your name.

Phoenix—Forever 17.

“Phoenix remains at the heart of this journey—his life, his personality and the lessons he taught me continue to rise through every page.”
